Length scales of convection in highly viscous fluids

Summer research project with Dr. Mark Jellinek (2004)

In Dr. Jellink's lab, my work focused on studying the viscous convection that occurs in the earth's mantle. I set up two experiments to simulate this type of convection - one in two dimensions (shown below) and the other in three dimensions.

The evolution of mantle plumes was captured in high resolution using a QImaging Regita video camera. Images were processed using NIH Image and length scales of mixing were analysed by 2D Fourier transform.
